Start by looking for breeders who complete breed-specific health testing through organizations like OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) or PennHIP, along with genetic screening through Embark or Paw Print Genetics. Reputable Doodle breeders are typically members of breed clubs such as GANA (Goldendoodle Association of North America), ALAA (Australian Labradoodle Association of America), or WALA (Worldwide Australian Labradoodle Association). At minimum, responsible Doodle breeders should perform hip and elbow evaluations (OFA or PennHIP), an eye exam by a board-certified ophthalmologist, cardiac evaluation, and DNA testing for breed-relevant genetic conditions such as PRA (Progressive Retinal Atrophy), vWD (von Willebrand Disease), and DM (Degenerative Myelopathy). Gold Standard Circle breeders go further by using genetic panels through Embark, Paw Print Genetics, or Orivet to screen for 200+ conditions. Health testing results should be publicly verifiable on the OFA database.

Each breeder is personally reviewed by Corinne Gearhart, The Doodle Pro, a Doodle-specific expert with over 50,000 hours of hands-on experience. To be included, breeders must demonstrate active membership in recognized breed clubs, complete all recommended health screenings, and implement enrichment-based puppy development programs such as Puppy Culture, Avidog, or Empowered Pup. Families can also nominate a breeder for consideration.
Puppies who receive structured early enrichment during their first 8 to 12 weeks develop stronger resilience to stress, better socialization skills, and more confident temperaments. Programs like Puppy Culture, Avidog, and Empowered Pup use science-based protocols including early neurological stimulation (ENS), exposure to novel surfaces and sounds, and positive-reinforcement-based handling exercises. Research shows these early experiences have lasting effects on a puppy's behavior and adaptability. Breeders in the Gold Standard Circle are required to implement at least one recognized puppy enrichment program.
Be cautious of breeders who have multiple litters available at all times, do not provide health testing documentation from OFA or an equivalent database, refuse to let you visit their facility or meet the parent dogs, or offer to ship puppies without any screening process. This price reflects the cost of comprehensive genetic and orthopedic testing for both parent dogs, breed club memberships, quality nutrition, veterinary care, early enrichment protocols, and responsible breeding practices. While lower-priced puppies may be available, significantly cheaper options often come from breeders who cut corners on health testing or puppy development, which can lead to much higher veterinary and behavioral costs over your dog's lifetime.
These terms describe the generational cross of a Doodle. F1 means first generation (one purebred parent of each breed, for example a Golden Retriever crossed with a Poodle).
